The whole Toole Family plus the latest grandchildren at a local 5k run.
Growing up in the seventies meant that the door was never locked, short shorts were in style, and Kevin Toole, one of the 3 owners of the Graydon-Toole Group, was out of the house in the morning only to wander back to refuel or get a daily chore done. Being one of three siblings, Kevin and his younger brother, Billy Toole, were known throughout Bay Village for their basketball prowess. They would be the first ones to the park in the morning and the last ones to leave as the basketball court lights shut off at the end of the night. Weekends were filled will cars full of teenagers being shuttled across town to play against anyone and everyone in the Cleveland area who had loved the sport.
Seeing Kevin’s skills in high school and college, one would assume he was one of the lucky ones who was born with the ability and grit to be successful at the physically and mentally demanding sport. However, success did not come easy. As a freshman in high school, he was barely over 100 pounds and about as intimidating as a golden retriever -with the 70’s mop top to match. But what he lacked in size he made up for in determination. Spending over 6 hours - yes, 6! - everyday practicing ball handling, shoot drills, and playing pick-up games with anyone who showed up at the court, Kevin became known for his ball handling and defense and still stuns players even now in his 50’s.
Maturity gradually caught up with Kevin and he went on to play college ball at Baldwin Wallace University. He will readily admit that he is not the most talented player, but you would be hard pressed to find someone who would outwork him. What could have easily been a brief and lack-luster high school career, he instead went on to start for numerous conference and divisional championship teams. And this infectious and enthusiastic dedication could not help but to be passed on to those around him.
Though his athletic achievements were impressive, the arguably best trait he possesses is that of a teammate and leader that was able to translate into his professional career. His kids will begrudgingly tell you that it took forever to get out of the parking lot after Sunday mass because every few steps meant another conversation, and his co-workers know he is always quick to smile and brighten the mood.
This is merely a snapshot of his life but give stay tuned and we will have even more stories of the Graydon-Toole team. Insurance is our craft at we have been dedicated to it for over 80 years.
